BEGINNER TIPS

Yoga can be so many things at the same time. It can be fun, physically challenging, spiritual uplifting, calming, healthy, profound and maybe a bit overwhelming at first. I want you to have the best possible experience in your yoga classes right from the very start, so here are a few helpful suggestions for those yogis who are just starting their yoga practice.

Yoga Tip Number 1:

An empty stomach is your friend. Yoga and full stomachs don't play nice together. Please refrain from eating a meal 2 to 3 hours before class. Some styles of yoga can be quite physical and it is doubtful that you will feel your best if your energy is being used for digestion.

Yoga Tip Number 2:

Don't be phoney.
Cell phones have a way of ringing at the wrong time and anytime during your yoga practice is the wrong time. Turning off your phone before entering the class shows that you have good yoga manners. To turn your good yoga manners into great yoga manners, read the section on etiquette to

Yoga Tip Number 3:

New in town?
If your new to a class, say so. Yoga teachers like new students and will make sure to give you a helping hand so to speak. Introducing yourself to the teacher before class gives you a chance to ask any questions that you may have and mention any injuries or medical conditions that you are dealing with. (consult your healthcare provider to find out if yoga is acceptable with your condition or injury)

Yoga Tip Number 4:

Give me my props.
Some yoga classes make use of props. Yoga blocks, straps, blankets, cushions ,etc. are called props. They can help you to get the most out of your poses by helping to align and support the body. Sometimes newer students are reluctant to use props if they see others doing their asanas without them. Just know that those students probable used and still use yoga props from time to time. Props are an excellent way to deepen your understanding of proper alignment in you practice, so if they have them, use them.

Yoga Tip Number 5:

Who's the fairest of them all?
The best yogi is not the one who can bend the most or twist the furthest. We are working more towards being balanced and joyful in our lives off the yoga mat. There is no competition in a yoga class. The mirror can be your friend if you use it to safely adjust your alignment or it can be your foe if you mostly use it to redirect your attention elsewhere. Always be kind to yourself and use your yoga practice to reconnect with You.

Yoga Tip Number 6:

No rest for the weary.
Luckily we yogis know the value of resting when needed. There is absolutely nothing wrong with resting in a yoga class. You should never be in pain or agony during class. Feeling Challenged, good. Pain, Not good. If you feel too warm, too tired. too out of breath or too anything at all, please listen to your body. We even have a great pose for resting in, we call it child pose.

Yoga Tip Number 7:

Every breath you take.
The mind may try to wander off in 101 different directions while you are doing your yoga asanas but the breath is your anchor. Always strive to be aware of the breath because it is a link between the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual.
