Sun salutations or suryanamaska is a wonderful way to start the day. If you are brand new to yoga, you can think of sun salutations as a way to make the body warm and the mind clear at the beginning of your yoga practice. I like to think of it as an important part of your " yoga homework" ( things that you can easily do for yourself everyday). If you make quality time for yourself, the time that you share with others will also improve. We can't give our best if we don't feel our best.
Although there are different types of sun salutations, suryanamaska A and suryanamaska C are the most common. It is best to learn them directly from a qualified yoga teacher, so think of these videos as just a study guide for the yoga homework. Remember if you are new to yoga or if it has been quite a while since you have exercised, you might want to take it easy at first.
The first video shows 1 round of sun salutation variation A (I stay in downward facing dog for 5 breaths) and the second video shows 2 rounds of variation C . A student can do 12 rounds of 1 variation, but you can also do 6 rounds of variation A and 6 rounds of variation C. You can even do just 6 rounds in all if you are new or pressed for time.
Also remember that in yoga we tend to inhale with movements that are rising and we tend to exhale with movements that are folding, diving or twisting. All breathing is through the nose ( for my own vinyasa yoga students, please use the ujjayi breath like we do in class )
